Dear Humboldtians,

On behalf of the Regional Group Munich of the Deutsche Gesellschaft der Humboldtianer we cordially invite you to the fifth Humboldt Salon in 2018 on October 23, which takes place in the Internationales Begegnungszentrum München (IBZ), as usual.

During the Salon a lecture will be given by Dr. Florian Lhuillier (Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München) on

Exploring the Earth’s magnetic field through times

The geomagnetic field, generated by convection inside the Earth’s core, can be preliminarily described by a geocentric dipole and efficiently used to find its way with a magnetic compass. This geomagnetic dipole however displays a rich variability, the most mysterious feature being its ability to stochastically reverse its polarity on a multi-million-year cadence. In this talk, we will first review the salient features of the present-day field, as they can be revealed from observatory and satellite data, and summarise how its generation can be schematically modelled with the so-called “geodynamo” equations. We will then explain how the Earth’s magnetic field can be explored and interpreted through geological times, with the emphasis being laid on the evolution of reversal frequency and the occurrence of anomalously long periods of stable polarity called superchrons.

After a Bachelor degree in physics and a Master degree in geophysics, F.L. defended in 2011 his doctorate at Institut de Physique de Paris (IPGP) about the “Variability and Predictability of the Earth’s dynamo”. From 2012 to 2014, he was awarded a Humboldt fellowship at the University of Munich (LMU). He has been occupying since 2014 a position of “Akademischer Rat auf Zeit” at the Chair of Geophysics at LMU, is supervising the geomagnetic observatory in Fürstenfeldbruck and preparing his “Habilitation”. His main focus of research is to understand the variability of the Earth’s magnetic field from the acquisition of palaeomagnetic data and the interpretation of numerical dynamo simulations. As a field geophysicist, he conducted in the last years several field campaigns in Ethiopia and China to collect palaeomagnetic rock samples.

Venue:Internationales Begegnungszentrum München (IBZ), Amalienstr. 38, 80799 München
Date: October 23, 2018, 19:30

Snacks and beverages will be available, sponsored by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. In order to facilitate preparations, we kindly ask you to confirm participation and indicate the number of persons attending the Salon, by October 21, 2018, to Mr Kruhl. Of course, partners are welcome!

With kind regards,
Jörn H. Kruhl and Lutz Cleemann
