Dear Humboldtians!

On behalf of the Regional Group Munich of the Deutsche Gesellschaft der Humboldtianer we cordially invite you to the last Humboldt Salon 2017, which takes place in the Internationales Begegnungszentrum München (IBZ), as usual. During the Salon a lecture will be given by Dr. Ander Egurtzegi (Universidad del Pais Vasco Linguistics and Basque Studies; currently at Institut für Phonetik und Sprachverarbeitung, LMU) on

Can speech errors become part of a language?

This talk presents the possibility of speech errors such as spoonerisms being integrated into the language as sporadic instances of sound change. In the case under study, a not very well-known kind of metathesis which is referred to as reciprocal metathesis is compared to a series of speech errors. In this kind of metathesis, two non-consecutive segments exchange their position without affecting the rest of the phonological sequence. In order to get a broad understanding of this process, a survey of reciprocal metatheses from a significant number of languages of the world is first presented, followed by a number of speech errors in English, to then compare the psycho-linguistic restrictions which seem to apply to each of these processes. Lastly, evidence of an intermediate state between the two processes is presented by means of a survey of speech errors produced by Spanish children. Given that speech errors affect particular words and not phonological contexts, it will be argued that this process is conditioned by lexical frequency and not expected to be systematic in any language.

Ander Egurtzegi wrote his dissertation Towards a phonetically grounded diachronic phonology of Basque at the University of the Basque Country under the supervision of Joseba Lakarra (UPV/EHU) and Juliette Blevins (CUNY) in 2014. His main research lines include the diachronic phonology of the Basque language, the study of typologically uncommon sound patterns and the phonetic origin of the different kinds of sound change. His research focuses on Basque, but has worked on a wide range of languages from all over the globe. He was a post-doc in the Complutense University of Madrid from 2015 to 2016 and he is now a Humboldt fellow based in the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich.
