Mentoring / Advice

In all scholarship programs for postgraduate and postdoc candidates, the JSPS Club engages in mentoring scholars before they leave for Japan. In the following list you can find some examples for Club members in Japan that adopted a hosting role for JSPS scholars.

In particular you find these examples on the Japan scholarship preparative meetings for the JSPS Summer Program that are joinly organized by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The preparative meetings take place in spring in Bonn and are jointly arranged by the JSPS Bonn Office and the JSPS Club.

Concerning the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship, the Alexander von Humboldt foundation organizes special meetings within their network conferences for those scholars who will leave for Japan and those who have returned from Japan. In this setting, JSPS Bonn Office and JSPS Club are offering information and advice within a ”Japan group“.

In addition, JSPS organizes an orientation event in Tokyo several times a year, for all newly arrived scholars of the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship. During these events, all world-wide existing JSPS alumni organizations are introduced in a joint presentation. This task is currently carried out by German JSPS Alumni Association chairman and country repesentative for Japan Heinrich Menkhaus, in turn with representatives of alumni organizations from other countries.

In the following, we have compiled some articles from Club members that not only show how junior scientists may build up their cooperation network in Japan, but also in a retrospective view how scientific careers have developed during decades of close exchange with colleagues in Japan.

The Club also offers general information about Club activities, research stays in Japan and funding facilities in Japan during several events that are mainly (but not exclusively) aimed at a younger target group. Some of the following articles also provide insight into that topic.
