On April 19 and 20, 1996, the German JSPS Alumni Association together with the German representation of the JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) organized a meeting at the Hotel Astron in Raunheim near Frankfurt, inviting German scientists who worked as JSPS fellows in Japan. With the support of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Japanese scientists who are doing research here in Germany as Humboldt fellows have also been invited.

Approximately 200 guests attended the meeting, including the Japanese Ambassador Mr. Tatsuo Arima, as well as representatives of the German Foreign Office, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service, and the JSPS Headquarters in Tokyo. Speakers included: Prof. Heinz Riesenhuber, former Federal Minister of Research, Prof. Winrich Breipohl, University of Bonn, Mr. Karl-Heinz Meid, German-Japanese Business Development Office and Prof. Soichi Iijima, Honorary Professor of Nagoya University.

For the first time, this meeting brought together fellows from the various JSPS funding programs, including young scientists who have spent a year or more doing research at Japanese institutes and universities after earning their doctorates, and experienced professors whose connections with Japanese colleagues often go back decades. On the one hand, the meeting was intended to exchange experiences in the field of scientific and cultural cooperation with Japan and, on the other hand, to open up the possibility of new contacts.

The organizer, the German JSPS Alumni Association, was founded at the end of 1995. The aim of the association is to promote scientific exchange between Germany and Japan. In doing so, the association works closely with the JSPS Liaison Office Bonn.
